Organ Donation Saves Six Lives After Brain Death in Bursa
In Bursa, the organs of a 29-year-old individual who suffered brain death were donated by his family. According to a statement from the Provincial Health Directorate, the male patient, who had been receiving treatment at Bursa Yüksek İhtisas Training and Research Hospital for a brain hemorrhage, unfortunately suffered brain death despite doctors' efforts.
After discussions with hospital officials, the patient's family decided to donate his organs.
As part of the operation, his heart, liver, kidneys, and corneas were harvested. The corneas and one kidney were kept at Yüksek İhtisas Training and Research Hospital. The other kidney was sent to Uludağ University Medical Faculty Hospital in Bursa, the heart was sent to Akdeniz University, and the liver was sent to Ege University Hospital to be transplanted into patients awaiting organ transplants.
Bursa Yüksek İhtisas Training and Research Hospital's Organ Transplant Coordinator, Anesthesiology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Korgün Ökmen, shared that despite all medical efforts to treat the patient, they diagnosed brain death. He stated, “Despite all our efforts, we diagnosed brain death. His family made a great sacrifice and accepted to donate his organs."
Bursa Regional Organ Transplant Coordinator, Dr. Yavuz Selim Çınar, thanked the patient's family for giving hope to patients waiting for life-saving transplants, despite their personal grief.
Çınar added that the Bursa region continues to be a beacon of hope for patients awaiting organ transplants across Turkey.
